Welcome!

I'm a maker of theatre.
Sometimes I write, sometimes I direct, sometimes I perform. My work is immediate, playful, surprising and engaged with the world we all live in.

On this site, you can find out about my projects: past, present, future and imaginary.

Lots of activity coming up. This Friday my students are doing The Caucasian Chalk Circle, under my increasingly eccentric sort-of direction. And this Sunday you can see my new Story Hunt at GIFT in Gateshead.

I'm one of the "exciting artists of the past, present or future" (you get to decide which) who have joined forces to work on If The Walls Could Dance for Luxi at Darlington Arts Centre. (Link takes you to Facebook page.) If you're in the north east, do get along.

Two days at the Arts Centre in Darlington, working on If These Walls Could Dance, a project celebrating the history of that sadly day-numbered building.

me and my work

I juggle with comedy and tragedy, roughness and polish, truth and lies. I wrestle down big ideas about the world until they're small enough for us all to swallow. I want you to laugh, cry, gasp and change the world. Because we're all part of history, and that means we can all change it.

I've trained with Philippe Gaulier, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the National Theatre Studio. I've made work for the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Red Ladder, Pilot Theatre (and myself). You can insert the words "among others" at the end of every sentence in this paragraph.

I am an Associate Artist of ARC Theatre, Stockton-on-Tees.

The Times has described me as "part of the future of British theatre". My work has been described as "almost perfect" by the Scotsman; "near perfect" and "genius" by the Stage; "Fantastic" and "excellent" by the Herald; and "stylish", "terrific" and even "intelligent" by the Guardian.
