2018 is the first year since 2010 when I haven't premiered any new work.
It's overdue. I'm knackered.
This is a year to replenish the well, or let the field lie fallow, or whichever is your preferred rustic metaphor.
Over the summer I started work on a whole suite of new projects, including new solo work, new ensemble work, new work for young audiences, new work for communities in non-theatre spaces, things I'm in and things I'm not in. There's some overlap between all these projects but from the profusion in that list you'll get the idea that the well is filling back up and the field is beginning to sprout.
Here's a blogpost I wrote in the early part of the process.
Work is taking place at Shoreditch Town Hall, ARC Stockton, Theatre in the Mill, The Dukes Theatre Lancaster and Northern Stage, as well as in hotel rooms and cafes across the nation.
It's too early to say much about any of the work in development, but here are some things I've been thinking about a lot:
- wilderness
- folk memory
- how the truth crawls out eventually, even if it's after you're dead
- what you think is unfair when you're eight
- clapping your hands over your ears and saying LALALALALALA because there's just too much news and it's all too awful run to the hills
- running to the hills
- running in the hills
- running ultra distances in the hills
- class, obviously
- recovering from injury
- legacies
- rewilding
That's apart from all the things we're all thinking about a lot because they're in the news every day.
Even if it isn't, the two or three years from 2019 are going to be a lot less quiet new work-wise.
